About Us

After spending some time experiencing and falling in love with the Tuscan lifestyle, Mike and Andrea Hinchco decided to establish their own little piece of Italy in Matakana. The vineyard was planted in 1999 and the first  vintage released late in 2002. All development on the property was based around the concept of accompanying good food with fine wines and friends. The recent addition of the outdoor wood fired pizza oven and barn complex has rapidly become a popular meeting place for fellow vinters of the region and friends of the family where good food, handcrafted wines and friendships abound.

The vision for the  vineyard is to create premium varietal wines using fruit grown solely here on our sheltered slopes in the heartland of Matakana.
The wine making philosophy is based on a non-intrusive style, allowing the flavours of the grapes and the character of the vineyard to be expressed by the wine. It is important however to provide the right conditions to show off these attributes to their best, with elements such as oak and malolactic fermentation being only complimentary to the wine making process.

The use of the family name in marketing the wine was not taken lightly but as an assurance to the customer that the disciplines both in the vineyard and the winery create a wine that the family can be truly proud of.

Sited on a terraced valley, hidden in the heartland of Matakana, Hinchco Family Vineyard is a completely family owned and operated vineyard renowned for its handcrafted Merlot and Rosé. There is no cellar door and winery visits are only possible by appointment but wines are available from Taste in the nearby historic riverside town of Warkworth.
